Alaska Defense Initiative

Today's political climate in Washington, DC spells trouble for Alaska.  Special interests who want to drill, log, and mine Alaska's lands have friends in very high places:

Sen. Ted Stevens
Sen. Frank Murkowski
Rep. Don Young

Since 1994, Alaska's Congressmen have enjoyed very powerful positions in our nation's capitol. They have tried to use their power to exploit Alaska's public lands at every opportunity.  Sen. Ted Stevens is the top Republican on the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee.  Sen. Frank Murkowski is the top Republican the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, which presides over public lands issues.  And Rep. Don Young chairs the powerful House Transportation Committee and serves on the House Resources Committee.

For the past six years, the Alaska Delegation has been largely unable to promote their develop-at-all-costs agenda, thanks to the veto pen of former President Bill Clinton.  Now, with the election of Republican President George W. Bush, Alaska's Congressmen have a much more receptive voice in the oval office.

From oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to increasing logging on the Tongass National Forest, the Alaska Delegation has already indicated they plan a full-court press on Alaska's public lands.

That's why the Alaska Coalition has launched the Alaska Defense Initiative.  We will do our best to stop this all-out assault on Alaska's lands.  But we need your help.

Have your organization join the Alaska Coalition today!
