Membership

Membership in the Alaska Coalition does not require a financial commitment, although we do have a suggested voluntary membership contribution table on the next page.  We believe that the future of Alaska’s lands and waters is directly tied to the strength and political power of our coalition and our ability to mobilize grassroots support at the local level in every state, including yours.  Increasing the number and variety of member groups will bring us closer to our ultimate goal of ensuring permanent protection for these special places in Alaska.  The level of participation in the Alaska Coalition varies from one member to another, but in general each member group takes part in a variety of different activities to help protect wild Alaska.

Some of these activities may include:

·   Sending action alerts about Alaska issues to organization and business members

·   Signing onto letters to decision makers

·   Writing and/or submitting letters to the editor (LTEs)

·   Writing opinion pieces

·   Setting up meetings with members of Congress in your district or state

·   Tabling in your local community to educate the public about wild Alaska

·   Setting up or participating in local press events

·   Participating on a state steering committee* and helping to organize state “chapters” or groups

And many more!

* State Steering Committees

Who forms the State Steering Committees?:

o  Steering Committees are composed of volunteers from active member organizations of the Alaska Coalition.

o  Steering committees’ main purpose is to stay up to date on Alaska issues, share resources, and help push forward the Alaska Coalition core principles stated on the next page.

o  Steering Committees aim to be diverse in nature and include representatives from different constituencies.  While conservation groups will likely be more active and take more of a leadership role than other member organizations, other member groups (i.e. sporting, religious, labor and business groups) are encouraged to be as active and devote as much time and resources as they can.

How State Steering Committees work:

o  Alaska Coalition and Alaska Wilderness League field organizers may facilitate the Steering Committees in Alaska Coalition state(s).

o  Steering Committee members are encouraged to participate in conference calls (or in person meetings if possible) coordinated by an Alaska Coalition or Alaska Wilderness League field organizer.  Steering Committee members will be given the opportunity to hear an update on the campaigns, offer new ideas for grassroots activities, help plan events, collect and share intel from district meetings and address other issues concerning the campaigns or the coalition.

o  Alaska Coalition and Alaska Wilderness League field organizers can also set up a list-serve for their Steering Committee members to communicate between conference calls.  The list can also be used to distribute news updates in a timely manner, circulate minutes from the conference calls, distribute fact sheets, talking points, sample LTEs, and other essential materials.  Field organizers will serve as a rallying point for the state when things become heated (such as an impending vote).

Voluntary Membership Contributions:

The Alaska Coalition does not have any mandatory membership dues, because we strive to keep membership open and available to all who care about keeping Alaska wild.

We do gratefully accept voluntary contributions from our member organizations to help support our work.  For those organizations interested in giving, we have a suggested sliding scale based on an organization’s annual budget.
