Bay Resource Management Plan

An Angler’s Paradise
The fisheries resources in the Bay planning area are among the richest in the world. Commercial salmon fisheries, as well as subsistence and recreational use of fish, provide the foundation of the regional Bristol Bay economy and local community lifestyle.

Bristol Bay is the largest commercial sockeye salmon fishery in the world
and Bristol Bay sockeye salmon account for over 33%
of the total value of the State’s salmon fisheries.

The Bay RMP will establish the agency’s strategy for managing and allocating uses of 3.6 million acres of BLM-managed lands and resources in the Bristol Bay and Goodnews Bay areas of southwest Alaska. BLM completed initial public scoping in Spring 2005. Most public comments addressed mineral exploration and development, habitat management, recreation, access issues, and special management area designations, including Areas of Critical Environmental Concern and Wild & Scenic Rivers.
